Error Control in Multi-Element Generalized Polynomial ChaosMethod for Elliptic Problemswith Random Coefficients

چکیده
We develop the theory for a robust and efficient adaptive multi-element generalized polynomial chaos (ME-gPC) method for elliptic equations with random coefficients for a moderate number (O(10)) of random dimensions. We employ loworder (p≤ 3) polynomial chaos and refine the solution using adaptivity in the parametric space. We first study the approximation error of ME-gPC and prove its hpconvergence. We subsequently generate local and global a posteriori error estimators. In order to resolve the error equations efficiently, we construct a reduced space using much smaller number of terms in the enhanced polynomial chaos space to capture the errors of ME-gPC approximation. Based on the a posteriori estimators, we propose and implement an adaptive ME-gPC algorithm for elliptic problems with random coefficients. Numerical results for convergence and efficiency are also presented. AMS subject classifications: 65C20, 65C30

Some a Priori Error Estimates for Finite Element Approximations of Elliptic and Parabolic Linear Stochastic Partial Differential Equations
We study some theoretical aspects of Legendre polynomial chaos based finite element approximations of elliptic and parabolic linear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) and provide a priori error estimates in tensor product Sobolev spaces that hold under appropriate regularity assumptions. Our analysis takes place in the setting of finitedimensional noise, where the SPDE coefficien...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Multi-Element Generalized Polynomial Chaos Method for Stochastic Differential Equations
We formulate a Multi-Element generalized Polynomial Chaos (ME-gPC) method to deal with long-term integration and discontinuities in stochastic differential equations. We first present this method for Legendre-chaos corresponding to uniform random inputs, and subsequently we generalize it to other random inputs. The main idea of ME-gPC is to decompose the space of random inputs when the relative...
متن کاملOn Convergence rate of Wiener-Ito expansion for generalized random variables
In the past few years, there has been growing interest in numerical methods for stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs): see [1–3,5,6,8–11,13,14]. One of the important topics is the numerical approximation of solutions to SPDEs, where some of the coefficients are random variables. Some of the interesting approaches are spectral finite element methods using formal Hermite polynomial ch...
متن کاملA Priori Error Analysis of Stochastic Galerkin Mixed Approximations of Elliptic PDEs with Random Data
We construct stochastic Galerkin approximations to the solution of a first-order system of PDEs with random coefficients. Under the standard finite-dimensional noise assumption, we transform the variational saddle point problem to a parametric deterministic one. Approximations are constructed by combining mixed finite elements on the computational domain with M -variate tensor product polynomia...
متن کاملEquivalent a posteriori error estimates for spectral element solutions of constrained optimal control problem in one dimension
In this paper, we study spectral element approximation for a constrained optimal control problem in one dimension. The equivalent a posteriori error estimators are derived for the control, the state and the adjoint state approximation. Such estimators can be used to construct adaptive spectral elements for the control problems.
